02 Feb 12 | Don’t cry for me Argentina? There are reports from South America that the crops are not up to scratch. The Argentinean corn crop is now forecast to be anywhere from 18 to 23mmt. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) report was still pegging the Argentinean crop at 26mmt.
Putting on kilos for a top cause
02 Feb 12 | A MURRAY Grey steer weighing more than 400 kilograms will be auctioned at the Royal Canberra Show on February 23 to raise funds for prostate cancer. The steer donated by the Elizabeth Fields Murray Grey Stud at Yass has been prepared by the Rodd family from Wagga and there are high hopes he could raise $5000 or $6000.
02 Feb 12 | The Grassland Society of NSW will hold its annual conference from July 24 to 26 at Charles Sturt University, Wagga. The theme for the event is Managing a Grazing Business for Profit in the Agricultural Landscape. As farmers would attest, agriculture operates in a diverse landscape, with businesses having to cope with changes in soil, topography, climate, and markets just to name a few.
Supermarket discounts to hurt growers
02 Feb 12 | Riverina Citrus chairman, Frank Battistel is concerned about who will ultimately benefit from the announcement that Coles will heavily discount fruit and vegetables. “The question really is who will end up paying for these discounts in this latest price war?” Mr Battistel said.

02 Feb 12 | PROGENY from the Armdale and Armdale-Park Poll Dorset studs continued to shine at the Armstrong family’s on-property auction on Friday. Both ewes and rams made a top price of $1500 with the rams returning an average of $811 and the ewes averaged $592. Landmark auctioneer, Andrew Wishart and, Elders auctioneer, Steve Ridley sold the catalogue to a mix of new and repeat buyers.

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has recently published a factsheet titled “Precautions when buying rural land” which covers some of the issues to consider when purchasing a rural property.
Outlook bright for beef
26 Jan 12 | Industry body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) released its bi-annual forecast for the sector, predicting beef and veal production will grow to a record 2.197 million tonnes (carcase weight) this year. That is a 2.3 per cent jump from the previous year, due mainly to improved seasonal conditions which have led to heavier-than-average carcase weights.

While difficult given the unpredictable nature of our lamb industry we can use estimates and software to estimate the profitability of finishing store lambs (16-18kg HSCW) to trade or export weight categories over the approaching months.
A Canadian perspective
26 Jan 12 | A CANADIAN grain merchant has seen her first cotton crop during a whirlwind tour of regional NSW. Sherry Woods is a marketing adviser for FarmLink Marketing Solutions in southern Manitoba who has looked at farms near Wagga, in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, Hillston, Euabalong West, Condobolin, Forbes, Young and Cootamundra in the space of a few days.

The latest information will be outlined at a conference on February 7 and EH Graham Centre research liaison officer – communications, Toni Nugent says the timing couldn’t be better to fit in with growers as they start to think about the upcoming winter cropping season.
Emissions low in wool trials
19 Jan 12 | WOOL production could be using even less carbon than researchers initially thought. Woolgrowers, scientists and carbon specialists known as the Wool Carbon Alliance (WCA) have reviewed research on wool’s role in the natural carbon cycle and have declared advancements in methodology of carbon accounting has led to an up to 80 per cent smaller carbon footprint for wool.
19 Jan 12 | THE first U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Crop Report for 2012 on was released on January 12. We continue to see what appears to becoming a bit of a tradition over the last few years with the moving of the entire allowable daily limit.
19 Jan 12 | THE encouraging trend continued for the wool market this week as the EMI rose 27c to sit on 1216c after the scheduled three-week Christmas recess. In US currency terms the EMI rose a whopping 76c as the Australian dollar cracked the 103c barrier.

Foreign investment same as in 1980s
19 Jan 12 | FOREIGN ownership of Australian agricultural land and businesses has remained virtually unchanged since the early 1980s, a federal government report shows. It found one per cent of Australia’s 135,648 agricultural businesses are wholly or partly foreign owned.
12 Jan 12 | PASTURES around the district are doing their normal thing for this time of the year and reducing in quality. As they mature and dry out the energy and protein levels reduce significantly and so do cattle growth rates. In my district, many properties east of the Hume Highway still have green feed – often clover and good stands of phalaris. The cattle grazing these pastures are still growing well.
Lamb stars in music video
12 Jan 12 | AUSTRALIA’S lambassador Sam Kekovich is back on the bandwagon for the 2012 Australia Day lamb campaign – this time in music video form. As well as the traditional rant from Mr Kekovich spruiking the qualities of lamb, he has taken Aqua’s 1990s hit Barbie Girl and created what he claims to be his first “chop hit”.
