An exciting week for sheep and cattle sales

18 Aug, 2010 09:40 PM
It was a sellers market for lambs as the tight numbers were largely responsible for a dearer trend for all categories across the markets.

The lighter portion of new season trade weight lambs were stable as most pens settled at $126/head or 574c/kg cwt.

The heavier trade weights also registered little change to average $136/head or around 575c/kg cwt.

Trade weight merino lambs to slaughter were stable at $113, while the heavier pens lost $5 to average $119/head.

Second cross older trade lambs mainly dearer, selling between $114 and $127/head or around 540c/kg cwt.

Heavy lambs to export processors were generally $3 to $7 dearer, as the 3 score pens average $138/head.

The heavier, better finished pens were impressive as sales peaked at $200 at the Wagga market – a new price record at MLA’s NLRS reported markets.

Cattle

Most markets exhibited mixed quality with unfinished well bred young cattle for feeders and restockers to consider alongside some good conditioned, finished lines.

Over the hooks rates mostly remained unchanged despite the A$ remaining above US90c.

Lightweight C muscled vealer steers gained 5c to average 226c after reaching a top of 244c as D muscled vealers to restock averaged 225c/kg.

Medium weights also returning to the paddock improved 2c mostly selling around 217c/kg.

Lightweight vealer heifers to the trade gained 4c after selling to 218c and averaged 203c/kg.
