Farmers' rights

04 Feb, 2010 10:29 AM
THOUSANDS of farmers took their message about property rights to Canberra this week.

Inspired by Cooma farmer Peter Spencer's 52-day hunger strike, the NSW Farmers' Association organised the rally in a bid to encourage the Government to review property rights, including those governing native vegetation clearing, water and mining.

Lockhart property owner Bill McDonnell was among the thousands of passionate protesters in attendance hoping to spur the Government into reviewing the rights of farmers.

Mr McDonnell said he was hopful the rally had struck a chord with the Rudd Government and that a review of farm property rights might be forthcoming.

"The main reason we went there was to get policy makers to listen to farmers and to get good environmental planning laws in place to enable sustainable development of their land," he said.

"We've got to establish a sustainable government policy that we are able to carry forward into the future.

"It will be a long process but today was step one and it's up to the lobby groups now to continue putting pressure on various government bodies."

Peter Spencer appeared at the rally and spoke of his grattitude at the overwhelming support shown by farmers right across the nation.

Also addressing the crowd were Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and Nationals Senate Leader Barnaby Joyce.

Mr McDonnell said the atmosphere had been extremely positive and all those in attendance had been buoyed by the speakers and the support of the Coalition.

"The speakers were very supportive and encouraging and the crowd was appreciative of the speakers," he said.
