Flying foxes attack apples

04 Mar, 2010 12:27 PM
WITH concerns about Australia's apple crop from flying fox damage Batlow growers have fortunately escaped the wrath of this pest.

Batlow Fruit Cooperative, manager of technical services, Ron Gordon said there had never been flying foxes in the Batlow region.

"Years ago there was a colony at Adelong at one stage," he said.

However, the story was not so bright for other growing regions throughout the state and the NSW Farmers' Association is calling for action.

NSW Farmers' Association horticulture committee chair, Peter Darley says fruit growers have reported astronomical crop losses in recent days, predominantly in the Sydney Basin.

"We have long been seeking a commitment from the NSW Government to address the perennial issue of flying-fox culling and crop losses in NSW," Mr Darley said.
