Hairy issue: men’s health

01 Dec, 2011 10:14 AM
MANAGER of Wagga’s Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC) Paul Martin said no one knows the effects of depression more than farmers.

His experience of seeing what he described as “stubborn” men avoid mental health issues through turbulent drought was what prompted him to participate in this year’s Movember event.

He was approached in late October as part of a campaign to involve high profile businessmen to grow a moustache to raise money and awareness for men’s health.

“We have been all getting around looking ridiculous for a month and offending our families but it’s all worth it to raise money,” Mr Martin said.

Mr Martin predicts close to $2000 has been raised, but the real total will be revealed today at the sale yards.

An auction to the rights to shave off Mr Martin’s moustache will be held today as part of the sale yards’ open day to raise more money.

“I have seen men’s health become an issue,” he said.

“The rural sector adopts that ‘she’ll be right’ attitude.

“If social stigmas are broken down it all helps.”
