TALENTED dogs and high-class livestock from the Riverina dominated many of the classes at the Royal Canberra Show.
Peter Darmody, "Wybimbie", Beckom, and his three-year-old kelpie Strike made the finals of the yard dog trial on Sunday after some successful rounds earlier on.
He said the competition at Canberra was hot and unfortunately he was out of the major placings in the ACT championship but had earned a couple of ribbons in the improver and novice classes.
"I was just pleased to make the final, there were 35 dogs in the championship," he said.
Mr Darmody said he was happy with how his dogs were performing and Canberra Royal Show followed closely with his big successes in winning the open trial the week earlier at the Gundagai Show.
"Strike is on fire," he said of the black and tan dog which was purchased from Downside breeder Stephen Condell as a pup.
Meanwhile, the Armstrong family, of Armdale and Armdale Park Poll Dorset Studs, Marrar dominated the sheep judging and earned the top honours win a one-and-a-half-year-old ewe.
Armdale also won the supreme short-wool interbreed group and after taking 20 sheep there were just two that didn't receive a ribbon.
"It was very exciting, I was thrilled to bits," Shirley Armstrong said.
In the cattle pavillion 22 breeds were on display and herefords and poll herefords were selected as the feature this year.
After particpating in the National Capital White Face Feature Show, Holbrook breeders Mike Todd and Mark Baker, Kanimbla Poll Hereford Stud came home with the junior and grand champion bull, which also earned the supreme whiteface exhibit, and the cow and calf won the senior and grand champion female.
"The quality in the entire shed was good, I think it was lovely to see that amount of white-face cattle back in the shed ... it has been a while since we had a shed with so many whiteface cattle at Canberra and they all presented very well," Mr Todd said.
