The top flock

RIVERINA sheep breeders Geoff and Dianne Peters and sons Andrew and Mark took home top honours during their first foray into the Hay Peppin Shaw Ewe Flock Competition.

The Peters' "Yandembah", Booligal, flock was also announced the district's first winning poll merino entry in the maiden ewe flock competition.

The Peters' flock is based on Ballatherie poll merino genetics, from the family's Ballatherie stud operation is on their home property "Ballatherie", near Hillston.

The runner up and southern area winner was the Matthews family's "Bedarbidgal", Hay, flock, whose Pooginook-blood flock also placed second in 2008. Third was the Rogers family's Alma-blood "Yarto", Booligal flock.

The central area winner was the Rutledge family's "Yeadon", Hay, flock.

Judges Rob Ashby, Old Ashrose Merino stud, South Australia, Will Roberts, Victoria Downs Merino Stud, Queensland and associate judge Spike Orr "Wilga", Parkes determined the five top flocks as "Yandembah", "Bedarbidgal", "Yarto", "Nyangay", Booroorban and "Cooinbil" at Coleambally.

The classer of the winning flock was Wagga's Stuart Hodgson.

Peppin Shaw president, David Rankin said the 2010 Competition was one of the best ever with more than 140 people travelling on buses over the two days, accompanied by numerous cars and the occasional aeroplane.

Visitors attended the event from NSW, Victoria, and South Australia.

"It was a very positive feeling with showers of rain literally on the horizon, everyone talking about high sheep and wool prices and on the back of some of the best rain in 50 years," Mr Rankin said.
