PRICES for young restocker cattle spiked at over 270c a kilogram when the Henwood family sold off 1500 head at Wagga this week.
The market couldn't have been held at a better time to capitalise on recent rain and low stock numbers.
Cattle industry stalwart, Stan Henwood, together with his family, offered 700 steers and 800 heifers to a buoyant market with buyers from as far away as Goondiwindi securing lots.
Heifers sold from $435 to $620 to average $503.
Steers made $490 to $650 and averaged $592 and the sale overall achieved an average of $545.
Elders Wagga auctioneer, James Tierney said when the prices were calculated on a per kilogram basis the values were exceptionally high.
In fact many of the lighter steers made 230c/kg to 270c/kg.
"It exceeded our expectations," Mr Tierney said.
Over the years the Henwood family has run a series of special store sales offering restockers large lines of well-bred even cattle.
"This would have been one of the dearest sales for the Henwoods," he said.
Mr Tierney said the cattle were sourced by buyers from throughout the local area, Wodonga, Griffith, and Gundagai.
"There was one major buyer from Goondiwindi," he said.
Meanwhile, he said the timing of the sale capitalised on a hot market for store cattle and helped to fill the void in replacement cattle for restockers.
