Wheat farmers claim growers have lost $4 billion three years

30 Jun, 2011 04:08 PM
RANKINS Springs farmer Jock Munro and a group of wheat growers believe those in the industry have been shortchanged to the tune of $4 billion in the three years since deregulation of the single desk.

Mr Munro, who is part of the Australian Wheat Board grains committee, and other wheat growers have drawn up an invoice for the federal government.

“It’s the third year of deregulation and we just want to get out there what the cost is to us – there’s a lot of unease in the wheat-growing community,” Mr Munro said on Tuesday.

The group came up with the figure after calculating losses through foreign currency hedging, supply chain cost increases, loss of markets and wheat prices.

The invoice is about generating discussion, Mr Munro said.

“We want people and industry experts to come out and either agree or disagree (with our estimate); if they don’t agree, then what do they think growers have incurred in losses?” Mr Munro said.

Federal member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, “(doesn’t) blame Jock Munro and wheat growers for putting the bill” forward.
