Waterhouse's babies the envy of many

06 Feb, 2012 02:00 AM

GAI WATERHOUSE'S imposing entourage of two-year-olds will attempt to sweep the juvenile scene in Sydney over the next month but stable favourite Rex Is A Star will carry her hopes at Rosehill on Saturday.

The tiny Encosta De Lago filly out of Sliding Cube, which is a half-sister to Redoute's Choice, Platinum Scissors and Manhattan Rain, is out to add her name to the long list of two-year-old winners for Waterhouse this season. She and Kuchinskaya will run in Sydney on Saturday, while No Looking Back will have her first run since losing the Magic Millions Classic on protest in the fillies' Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield.

''She is going down for the Blue Diamond, and I think she will go better the Melbourne way,'' Waterhouse said. No Looking Back will be the stable's only runner in the $1 million group 1 at the end of the month after Waterhouse decided to keep the smart Raceway in Sydney.

It is rare that Waterhouse plays favourites but it is clear Rex Is A Star, which ran second at Kembla last month, has a place in her heart.

''She is tiny and like a little foal around the stable,'' she said. ''She just has the most wonderful nature and tries too hard. She is so sweet and that has made her very popular with everyone at the stable. There is something special about her.''

Waterhouse is having a juvenile season to remember, and has already pocketed the Breeders' Plate with Pierro, while the unbeaten Driefontein has won the Magic Millions and the BJ McLachlan Stakes in Brisbane. Driefontein will defend her record in the Widden Stakes at Warwick Farm on February 18, and Raceway, an impressive winner of his only start, will make his next appearance in the Canonbury Stakes on the same day.

Pierro will trial at Rosehill tomorrow, and is aimed at the Silver Slipper on March 3. ''He is coming along well, and the Silver Slipper is the right place for him to return,'' she said. ''We have quite an exciting team.''
