A PERFECT combination of genetics and preparation has allowed a Shorthorn, Angus cross steer to blitz the field at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in the carcase competition.

The 11-month-old steer bred by Steve and Amanda Carter from Blackjack Shorthorns at Tumut was prepared by students from Yanco Agricultural High School scored a whopping 91.5 (out of 100) on the hook.
Drawing on some of the most influential genes in the Shorthorn breed the steer was sired by Spry's Patents Ace.
Mr Carter said the steer was bred from a commercial Angus female and the cross had proven to be successful.
In fact it is this recipe that the Carter family use to produce some of their top-performing commercial cattle which are sold off annually in the southern weaner sales.
Mr Carter said the students from Yanco Agricultural High School started preparing the steer for the Sydney Royal Easter Show in November last year.
As well as excelling in the carcase competition Blackjack Shorthorns also enjoyed plenty of success at the royal with their stud cattle.
"We had a good show, we won a couple of classes and got second in a couple of classes we took six head and everything won a ribbon," Mr Carter said.
The influence of Spry's Patents Ace continued in the stud section of the show too and cattle sired by him won the sire's progeny group.
The Carter family have been breeding Shorthorns since 1998.
