“It is especially pleasing to see the NSW Government supports all of the recommendations of the taskforce that was created to develop the plan,” said NSW Farmers’ President, Fiona Simson.
“Being at the forefront of the issues that affect the productivity of our members, we were obviously quite keen to see the government make a clear commitment to the initiatives and recommendations put forward.
“We are currently working through the detail of what has been recommended. It is clear however, there are a number of areas that need priority action from government if it is serious about the future of farming in this state
“Chief amongst our concerns is the excessive red tape associated with native vegetation laws. Just fixing this alone could have massive positive impacts on farm productivity.
“The commitment for improved consideration of the impacts on agricultural industry competitiveness is another area that our members will want to see immediately actioned.”
Ms Simson said she was also looking for a more solid commitment for rural road and rail infrastructure. This infrastructure is a hugely significant contributor to production costs. There are vast opportunities for logistical gains and the unlocking of greater competition. We need government to take a leadership role.
She congratulated the taskforce and the Minister for driving the plan’s development but urged the government to turn the plan and its statements into policy reality.
“Implementation and appropriate funding for the recommendations will ensure that the plan actually delivers and that it does not sit on a shelf gathering dust," she concluded.
