A field day to promote Ron’s journey as a way of improving farm productivity and profit is being held at the Bowman’s Murmungee Hall with a tour of Ferguson’s property ‘Liddesdale’ near Murmungee on Monday, May, 4 from 10 am to noon.
The journey is being mentored by farm consultant Chris Mirams and draws upon funds provided by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) to the Burgoigee Creek Landcare Group, to run the ‘Grazing Systems to Improve Profit’ trials.
Farmers attending the field day will also have the opportunity to join the mentoring program.
“‘Ron’s journey’ will ride on the back of what is proving to be a very successful MLA Producer Demonstration Site, ‘Grazing Systems to Improve Profit’ now underway near Wangaratta on Linton Wadley’s property ‘Wendouree West’, involving rotational grazing of steers,” Mr Mirams said.
“Feedback from this trial alerted us to the fact that farmers in north east Victoria would be very interested in a trial that promoted rotational grazing for cows and calves.”
Mr Ferguson, who runs 500 cows on a 440 hectare property, said he has been a traditional farmer.
“Recent off-farm investments made me realise that they were not the way I wanted to improve my profitability. I wanted to make changes to improve profits on our farm where I would get the most satisfaction,” Mr Ferguson said.
The field day is free. Morning tea is at 9.30 am before a 10 am start with a lunch at noon.
