Underpinned by return buyers and new clients, the 41 spring-2014 drop bulls sold to top of $15,000 and averaged $7963 for a complete clearance.
Conducted by stud stock agents, Elders, Gundagai, the Helmsman bull sale was led by Elders stud stock specialist, Goulburn, Stephen Ridley.
Speaking before the sale, stud co-principal, Bill Graham, said he welcomed the recent purchase by Elders of noted local livestock agency McAllister Saunderson Stubbs.
“We have always dealt with local firms, and we will continue to be associated with the local branch,” Mr Graham said.
“The advantage we now have is the wider stud stock connection through Elders.”
Top price at $15,000 was paid for Bongongo K319 by return clients for many years, Graeme, Carol and Robbie Harris, “Springvale”, Coolac.
The son of NPYH64 Patawalla H64 attracted the attention of the Harris family for his length and depth, as well as his figures.
Robbie Harris said he looked good in the yard, but his low birthweight figures were what they were looking for.
“He will be joined to heifers, and his low birthweight of +2.2 combined with 400-days of +81 means he will produce calves for the feedlot without calving trouble,” Mr Harris said.
The Harris family purchased a second sire for $12,000.
A significant purchase of five bulls was made by return buyers B.T. and M.J. Boyd, Wyangle, whose selection averaged $5,100.
Other volume buyers included John Graham, “Boonongo”, Morundah, who paid an average price of $11,250 for two sires, Merriment Past Co., “Cowarubin”, Forbes, purchased two bulls for $8750 and Beggan Beggan Pastoral Co., Harden, paid $9250 for two bulls.
Return buyers, K.B. and S.J. Mitchell, “East Wermatong”, Tooma, purchased two sires for $7,750 and Baltimore Enterprises, Junee, paid an average price of $9,720 for their draft of two bulls.
Buyers of single bulls included Oakey Creek Pastoral Co, Tumblong, who paid $12,000 for their selection, Brian and Fay Clout, Tumut, who paid $11,500 for their choice, and Grant Fenn, Tumut, whose pick of the drop cost him $11,000.
Co-principal, Bill Graham was very pleased with the result and said the strong local interest confirms their genetic direction.
“It was an outstanding Helmsman sale, with tremendous support from return buyers and new clients,” he said.
