Mrs Curtis and her horse Sunny have returned from Queensland after competing in some of Australia’s most prestigious rodeos.
The pair won the barrel race at Mareeba Rodeo. There was a field of 40 competitors in the event and Mrs Curtis described it as the best win of her four-year career.
“Sunny just loved the arena there and the ground really suited him, it was a really good event,” she said. “I have had Sunny for two-and-a-half years,” she said.
“It shows that dreams can come true … if you work hard,” she said.
She entered the rodeo circuit after initially following the sport to help support her two sons get established in junior events including steer riding, barrel racing and breakaway roping.
The trip to Queensland incorporated rodeos at Georgetown, Mareeba and Charters Towers which were affiliated with the Australian Bushman’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA).
In addition to doing well at Mareeba Mrs Curtis also picked up a fourth place in the steer undecorating at Georgetown.
Her sons Jade, 16, and Braiden, 14, took time out from their studies to make the trip to Queensland too.
Mrs Curtis said both boys had success in their events.
She said the hope, or family goal, was for her and her two boys to qualify for the ABCRA finals in Tamworth in January.
