The Holbrook Landcare Network Self-Drive Ecotour, which has proved popular with visitors to the area, has undergone a review and upgrade thanks to the support of the Greater Hume Shire’s Community Development Grants Program.
Originally launched in 2003 as part of the Landcare Alive project, the Self-Drive Ecotour involves a self-directed tour of various sites around the Holbrook district and showcases the work landholders have done to address issues such as salinity, erosion, declining water quality and loss of biodiversity in the landscape.
Holbrook Landcare Network project officer Kylie Durant said that the recent upgrade was necessary to include new relevant sites and encourage more people to learn about environmental issues in the region.
“So much fantastic work is done to care for the land in our area and the Self-Drive Ecotour is a great way for people to see how that is having a positive effect on our landscape,” Kylie said.
The tour highlights activities such as farm forestry, erosion control, revegetation and riparian and wetland protection - all of which can be viewed from roadsides and public reserves. The updated tour comprises of four loops, with similar types of sites on each loop. The supporting brochure provides a map and each site is clearly signposted with a coloured disk and a number.
Now included in the brochure are quick response codes that will link to the Holbrook Landcare website to provide further details on the sites and their significance, as well as links to other sources that will provide details on some of the species and programs listed in the brochure.
“The sites on the tour are great examples of what’s happening in our district and a good way to get an appreciation for the work that has been done and the outcomes that we are seeing,” Kylie said.
Details of the tour can be found on the Holbrook Landcare website or by picking up a brochure from the Holbrook Landcare Network or Greater Hume Shire offices in Holbrook.
