According to Meat and Livestock Australia’s (MLA) national livestock reporting service wet weather had a significant effect on supplies, with numbers falling sharply.
Quality was mixed with the bulk of the offering made up of store conditioned stock.
Grown steers and bullocks were in limited supply along with a reduced offering of cows.
Restockers and feedlots were active and had the greatest influence over most categories.
A mixed quality supply of vealers sold to stronger demand, from 330c to 380c/kg.
Medium weight grass finished trade heifers were in reasonable supply however some pen lots lacked finish causing prices to fluctuate.
The better covered heifers suitable for the trade sold firm to average 318c/kg.
Trade weight steers were few, making from 292c to 354c/kg.
Rain inspired restockers, with the bulk of the lighter steers back to the paddock making from 344c to 415c/kg.
Feeder steer prices increased by strong demand from major feedlots which resulted in a dearer price trend of up to 26c/kg.
The main lines of 400-500kg sold from 315c to 371c/kg.
The main run of lighter feeder heifers sold to strong competition, with well-bred heifers selling from 312c to 352c/kg.
Prices for heavy weight steers sold 3c easier.
Heavy bullocks sold to stronger demand, with all exporters keen to buy weight and finish.
The better quality pens of prime finished steers and bullocks made from 300c to 340c/kg.
Cow numbers fell significantly in a mixed quality offering, with all weights and grades represented.
Heavy cow prices were 3c dearer to average 248c/kg.
The D3 medium weight slipped 3c, selling at 216c to 240c/kg. There were quite a few restocking orders in place and store buyers purchased a good percentage of the leaner types.
