Those who attend the weekly sheep and cattle sales would have noticed the temporary fencing taking shape and the start of new work. 

Wagga Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC) manager Paul Martin said this upgrade will secure the facility into the future. 

“It is exciting times for the LMC, with works on the expansion starting to take shape,” Mr Martin said. He said the new works include an expansion of the existing cattle yards which would increase the holding capacity from a nominal 2700 head to 5500.  “To make way for the larger cattle yards, the existing calf pens will be relocated and a roofed area will be built providing a more versatile area for the selling of calves and store cattle,” he said. 

The cattle sale at Wagga, which uses a ring-selling system, is one of Australia’s most influential and the sheep market is the largest in the southern hemisphere and regularly attracts overseas tourists and visitors. 

Millions of dollars change hands each week and the centre has made national news headlines over the years during record sales in terms of volume and also high prices.
