Bauer, Ariah Park, NSW, won the ribbon, with stud principal Jamie Buerckner’s 12 month old ram.
He said the ram, which was still only a lamb, would probably now be set for the Royal Melbourne Show, later this year.
Judge Harold Manton said he was impressed by the good classes and entries.
“I was particularly impressed with the young ram I gave the championship to, he is avery correct sheep and worth the award,” Mr Manton said.
“It will be interesting to see where he eneds up.”
He said the line-up was a good sign for the future of Border Leicesters.
“The wool job is bouyant, and picking up all the time, it’s all good for the Border job, and the first cross ewe job,” he said.
“That’s what the Borders are all about, to produce that magnificent mother, in the Border Merino first cross ewe.”
He said in the last few years, Border Leicesters had “firmed up.
“Last spring, the flock ram sales were good and I think they will be quite a bit better this year for two reasons,” he said.
“One is the wool market is strong, but the lamb job is very strong, and primary industry at the moment is going through a wonderful stage.
“It’s unusual for everything to be good at one time and this is one of those eras, that probably happens once in a life time, when the beef and lamb market are particularly strong.
“We just need to season to go with it.
