The strength of Valley Vista Poll Dorset stud's breeding ewe flock has been proven once again.

A VV138/14 daughter, which started the show season with an interbreed win at Canberra, has finished it the same way by taking out supreme all-breeds ewe at the Royal Melbourne Show.

They ewe was first sashed grand champion Poll Dorset female by judge Graham Hibbard, who complimented it on its size, saying "you need big ewes to breed big lambs".

Mr Hibbard named the ewe Tina - in a nod to Tina Turner's hit song, Simply the Best.

"She's a magnificent sheep with meat right through the carcass, she's got that volume about her but also retaining that femininity," Mr Hibbard, who is principal of Deepdene Poll Dorsets at Narrandera, said during interbreed judging.

The interbreed champ - a ewe under one-and-a-half years in the wool - wasn't the only Valley Vista ewe to impress the judge at Melbourne.

The stud’s shorn ewe under one-and-a-half years was reserve champion Poll Dorset female, while a ewe lamb placed first in its class. Both were VV138/14 daughters.

The grand and reserve ewes also teamed up with yet another VV138/14 daughter to win the Poll Dorset sire's progeny group and placed second in the interbreed sire's progeny judging.

Valley Vista also won both the wooly and shorn ram lamb (again VV138/14 progeny) classes at the Melbourne royal.

And as a final highlight to the consistent breeding line, VV138/14's full brother was placed second in the Balmoral ram (under one-and-a-half years shorn) class.

Mr Hibbard focused on strong structural integrity teamed with muscle and capacity.

Valley Vista principal Andrew Scott said the champion exhibits showcased the carcass shape needed to producer quality sucker lambs that could be turned off early.

Valley Vista Poll Dorset Stud was founded in 1976 and moved to Coolac in 1990

In 1991 the Scott family purchased the entire Meadow Creek Stud from the late Ernie Britt. Over the years there have been additions from the Armdale, Armdale Park, Karawina, Kurralea, Kismet, Rene and Tattykeel studs.

In November 2006 the stud purchased 550 ewes and stud sires from the Gererdan stud, at the time being amongst the top studs in Australia.

This has provided Valley Vista with a great base to breed from and its reputation has been enhanced by continued show success, since its first showing foray in 2000.

The Coolac stud will offer 150 rams at their annual on-property sale on Friday October 6 at 1:30pm, including 10 specially selected sires, where the strength of their ewe flock will once again be on display.
