HOW much rain have you had? Was the most common question asked this week. Parts of the Riverina received more than 100mm in the heavy downpour last week and there was followup rain in the past couple of days.

It was less than ideal given the fact that most people were trying to harvest winter crops. Interestingly farmers said all was not lost and dams were full and lucerne and pasture paddocks had been given a boost in the lead up to the summer grazing period.

On Tuesday the rural sector celebrated World Soil Day and there was talk about carbon sequestration and this was backed up by recent research from a NSW Department of Primary Industries scientist.

GrainGrowers came out and urged people to consider the fortunes of others during the ‘mixed bag’ 2017 harvest.

It was noted that the run of frosts, and then the heavy rain last week meant some crops were decimated while others had survived.
