The Ayrshire breeder and professional cake decorator will juggle his commitments in the two vastly different arenas.
Mr Robinson first picked up the piping bag 38 years ago thinking it “might be fun” after watching his wife decorate a cake.
With a natural creative flair he was soon balancing the commitments of a dairy farmer, at their property located near Wagga, with that of cake decorating.
“We started putting cakes in the Wagga Show and we used the judges feedback comments to make improvements,” Mr Robinson said.
The dairy farm was sold a few years ago and now the main focus is running Wagga business HD Cake Decorators.
However, Mr Robinson still has an interest in stud Ayrshire cattle and is involved in a small stud under a partnership arrangement.
“You can take the boy off the farm but you can’t take the farm out of the boy,” Mr Robinson laughed.
Despite the huge amount of effort that goes into preparing cakes for the Sydney Royal Easter Show Mr Robinson said he will probably be “busier” during the second week of the event when it comes to Ayrshire judging.
All of the work needed to enter decorated cakes had been done. In fact, one intricate wedding cake had absorbed more than 80 hours of work.
Mr Robinson said the challenge was in transporting the cakes to the show.
He planned to load up the van with seven carefully-crafted exhibits and make the journey to Sydney.
“In 30 years – touch wood – I have never had to repair a cake,” he said.
“It is just a matter of getting over the bum out the back here.”
Interestingly exhibiting decorated cakes can be quite a secretive business.
Mr Robinson was very careful that The Rural didn’t photograph any of the exhibits because it was important judges didn’t see the creations before the official judging.
He said it was all about preserving the “wow” factor of an exhibit.
