The McKay family have been in the Henty farming district since 1937, with Dugald and Didee now at the helm of “Jindalee”, a mixed farming enterprise with the combination of Merino sheep, first cross lambs, Angus cattle and cereal crops.
For the past 15 years, the McKays have been purchasing White Suffolk rams of the Yates family at Barwon.
Their decision to integrate Barwon White Suffolks into the breeding program stemmed from their ability to blend well with the traditional Merino program. Their smooth shoulders allowed the surplus ewes to have improved lambing ease while maintain a high lambing percentage.
Over that 15 years the breeding program has been enriched, meeting industry demands including improved EBV figures to match their already outstanding physical appearance.

Another aspect of the McKay’s program is the feedlotting of the White Suffolk/Merino cross lambs. Mr McKay could see the advantage of intensively feeding the lambs as they were hitting their peak weight during the drier months of January and February, with the kill sheets showing a 47 to 51 per cent dressing for 45 to 55kg lambs.
Barwon principal Mark Yates was happy to see the well managed animal husbandry program excelling and proud to see the Barwon progeny performing to its potential.
Barwon’s annual spring ram sale is being held Friday, October 13 at “Barwon South” from 1.30pm.
