With 71 years of quality breeding behind the Cadell Border Leicester stud, there was no empty seats in the shed as bidding kicked off.
The Harper family offered a total of 167 rams that sold for a $1910 average.
The 24 stud rams sold created interest from stud and commercial breeders to reach a high $3050 average.
Greg, Ryan and Jarod Koschitzke from Deleware Border Leicester stud, Brocklesby near Albury, purchased the top price ram for $5000.
The Cadell 374-16 sale topper, sired by Cadell Jesse 3rd from Cadell 812-14, had a Australian sheep breeding values (ASBVs) of 4.11 for weaning weight (WWT), a yearling weight (YWT) of 8.04, yearling eye muscle depth (YEMD) of 0.06 and a Border $ Index of 113.47.
Previously purchasing rams and ewes from the Cadell stud, Ryan Koschitzke and Elders agent Jim Bruce, Albury, said this particular ram had carcase dimension, width of top and depth of carcase to him.
“He was the standout sheep in the sale,” they said.
“We have previously bought a ram of this bloodline that has done well.”
Cadell Border Leicester owner Barry Harper, said the ram was one of the pick rams in the yard.
“He is big boned and big bodied,” Mr Harper said.
“This bloodline sells well each year and has proven productive and profitable for all.”
The second top price stud ram was Cadell 50-16 who sold for $4750 to Sunsbury Pastoral Company, Goulburn.
Sired by Kelso Dynasty from Cadell 214-09, the ram had ASBVs of 3.91 for WWT, 7.65 for YWT, maternal weaning weight of 0.78 and Border $ index of 111.04.
All 143 flock rams offered by the Harper family sold to a top of $2500 and an average of $1719.
Rams were sold in pens of four or five with a two hammer system used when required. Most people chose to take the entire pen offered.
Carson Family Trust, “Ooraine”, Dirranbandi, Queensland, purchased ten flock rams for a $1700 top and $2480 average.
Stud buyers Whitewood Border Leicesters, Nyngan, secured three stud rams for a $4500 top and a $3333 average. They also bought two flock rams for $1200 each.
Other volume buyers include; Alto Rural Pty Ltd, Dunedoo, who bought four stud rams for a $3000 top and $2688 average, and four flock rams for a $2100 average.
Anthony Tuck, Narromine, purchased 14 rams; Alan Gadsby, Molong, bought 13 rams; J. and N. McCormack, Crookwell, purchased 14 rams; Peter and Noel Wilson, Ungarie, bought 12 rams, and DJ. Watt, Trundle, purchased six rams.
Barry Harper said it is great thing for Border Leicester industry.
“People are recognising the value of Border Leicesters. First cross ewes are the most popular prime lamb breeding mother in Australia and Border Leicesters are part of that,” Mr Harper said.
Landmark and Elders, Wagga Wagga, conducted the sale with Peter Cabot (Landmark) and Joe Wilks (Elders) as auctioneers.
