Seasonal outcomes and the Riverina harvest made the pages of The Rural back in 2002.

It was a also a chance to attend social gatherings, field days and seminars. Agricultural research was on the agenda too.

And the region’s farmers had just come out of the driest October periods in 62 years. In fact, record low rainfall for Wagga turned any hopes of drought-breaking rains to dust.

Winter crops and pastures had withered and just 0.6mm of rain fell. This news was made even tougher considering that October was typically the wettest month for the region with an average of 61.6mm.

So October 2002 was the driest since 1941.

The lowest rainfall recorded at the Wagga Agricultural Institute, which has records back to 1898, is no rain in October of 1914 and 1940.
