A spokeswoman for the SES said the prediction for moderate to major flooding remained in place, with personnel closely monitoring of Wagga, Gundagai, Tumut and Jugiong, and other communities lying along the Murrumbidgee River.
She said SES personnel were keeping a particularly close eye on Wagga’s riverside caravan parks and North Wagga.
“A number of SES volunteers and members of the community have been sandbagging,” the spokeswoman said.
“We are asking people to make preparations now if they are in a flood-prone area.
“Raise items, fill sandbags and monitor for updates.”
A spokesman for the Bureau of Meteorology said the first rainfalls were beginning on Friday morning, with heavier falls likely to set in by late morning or early afternoon.
“We are looking at widespread rainfall of 30mm to 50mm, and possibly heavier under the storms for Friday,” he said.
“Saturday will be similar again, with up to 50mm, but that as much as double under the storm.
“It is a big weather system and it’s quite slow-moving.”
A severe weather warning remains in place for the Riverina, with a wind warning in place for Alpine regions.
The region’s wheat farmers have been working around in the clock to strip as much of their crops as possible before the potentially damaging rains arrive.
