According to Meat and Livestock Australia’s National Livestock Reporting Service, numbers lifted due to the dry autumn.
Despite the larger offering, the market showed some solid gains owing to wet conditions in Queensland. Quality was once again quite mixed, with the majority of yearlings suiting feedlots and restockers.
Trade cattle were in short supply, with domestic buyers reliant upon the heifer portion to fill their loads.
A full field of buyers were in attendance along with a few extra restocker and lot feeder orders from further north. Vealer numbers lifted and quality was very good.
The better finished veal sold from 280c to 328c/kg.
Vealer lacking finish sold to feedlots and restockers from 280c to 342c/kg. The limited supply of trade steers averaged 285c/kg.
The main run of trade heifers benefited from solid support from feedlots which pushed slaughter prices 2c higher to average 263c/kg.
Light weight store steers sold to mixed price trends with Angus steers more keenly sought.
Weaner steers back to the paddock made from 282c to 323c/kg.
Medium weight feeder steers sold 12c/kg dearer with buyers paying premiums for the Angus portion.
Lighter weight feeder steers met steady competition to average 296c/kg.
Feeder heifers sold to stronger price trends.
Medium weight feeder heifers gained 6c selling from 245c to 276c/kg. Heavy steers and bullocks sold to strong demand from processors along with some feedlot competition.
The C3 and C4 steers and bullocks to slaughter sold from 238c to 288c/kg. In the cow market quality was quite mixed with leaner cows now in greater numbers.
Northern processors pushed heavy cow prices 3c/kg higher. Heavy cows sold 221c/kg.
Leaner types met with strong demand from restockers and processors. The better covered D2 and D3 types to slaughter made from 186c to 213c/kg. Store cows sold from 175c to 225c/kg.
