According to Meat and Livestock Australia’s National Livestock Reporting Service quality was fair to good for heavy and trade categories, while lighter weights were of good quality.
Demand was solid with reports several processors had plenty of over the hooks lambs flowing to abattoirs. The usual export buyers were present, however not all domestic buyers operated fully.
There was stronger competition for trade lambs, with premiums paid for shorter skinned lambs with plenty of shape.
Medium and heavy trade lambs sold $3 to $5 dearer making from $137 to $166/head to average 637c/kg cwt.
Once again well-bred shorn trade lambs were keenly sought by a feedlot who paid up to $153.60/head.
Restockers were out in force with the bulk of the secondary lambs returning to the paddock. Heavy and extra heavy lambs were in reasonable supply, however at times bidding was weak.
Heavy lambs were unchanged making from $162 to $181/head.
Extra heavy lambs were $4 cheaper selling from $174 to $229/head to average 618c/kg cwt. It was a mixed quality offering of mutton with all weights and grades represented.
All buyers were operating and demand was strong. Heavy mutton was keenly sought with price increasing $9 to $17/head to average 473c to 503c/kg cwt. Trade sheep sold from $84 to $140 to average 464c/kg cwt. Light sheep made from $66 to $106/head.
