As a result, they will offer their property “Wongabeena”, Barellan, for lease by tender for a three-year term commencing on January 1, 2019.

The Whytcross family has been farming “Wongabeena” progressively and with increasingly innovative practices since 1966.

The property consists of 2644 hectares, of which about 2452 is arable.

“Wongabeen” is in the heart of a highly regarded cropping belt, 26km north of Barellan township and the nearest Graincorp Service centre.

Soils are typical red loam Mallee types, while all of the paddocks are well cleared and boast an average area of 100 hectares across the property.

Livestock has been part of the Whytcross operation for many years with Ken and Shirley running 1100 Merino ewes, currently lambing to BL Rams.

The Whytcross 1st X Ewes lambs have been a regular feature at the noted Barellan Breeders Sale in February each year.

Lucerne has also been a big part of the “Wongabeena” rotation with an average of 800 hectares established each year.

With an average annual rainfall of about 425mm “Wongabeena” lends itself to continuing to be a successful mixed farming or a cropping operation of considerable scale.

Access will be granted to the successful lessee on September 1, which will allow them to commence preparations for the 2019 cropping season.

Tenders for the lease of “Wongabeena” are to be submitted by 5pm on Friday, July 6.
