It comes as firefighters and members of local land services conduct a high-intensity controlled burn in east Wagga to kill the common white snail.
RFS Zone Operations officer Brad Stewart said volunteers had on Wednesday joined Fire and Rescue NSW members at unoccupied land, near Kooringal Road and Copland Street, to help eradicate the agricultural nuisance.
“Fire is the preferred treatment because it removes their food source and shelter,” Mr Stewart said.
"The heat kills them and it allows for baiting to then take place, which is another way to kill.”
Mr Stewart said the last time fire was used to get rid of the shelled pests, it was 98 per cent successful.
“We’re hoping to be wrapped up later this afternoon,” he said.
“The weather is working in our favour, with the wind carrying the smoke toward Forest Hill.”
Wagga agronomist Lisa Castleman said the economic impact snails caused could be dire.
The senior land services officer said the pest posed a great threat to the grains industry.
“It’s costly to get out of grain,” Ms Castleman said.
“They can make a lot of work that no one needs.”
