WESTERN Riverina’s Hay bursts with heritage charm and agricultural significance.

However, visit this June long weekend and you’ll find it’s less about the shearing and history and more about Minis and Dustdrinkers.

The Minis arrive from around Australia with their enthusiastic owners behind the wheels, ready to compare notes and share their passion for this much-loved car model.

The Australian Hay Mini Nationals is a weekend-long event with parties, a street parade, a ‘show and shine’ and the big race, the Mini Motorkhana, on Sunday, June 10.

The other big event for the long weekend is the Hay Dustdrinkers B&S Ball.

A major fundraising event for the Hay Magpies Rugby League Football Club, the B&S brings hundreds of young people to Hay for the weekend. On Saturday, they hop in their utes and create quite the spectacle, joining the Minis for the street parade.

Other places not to be missed on your Hay itinerary are Shear Outback, the museums at the Hay Gaol and Railway Station, and the historic Bishops Lodge.

The Hay Gaol Museum and the Dunera Museum, located within the heritage-listed railway station, are home to many intriguing stories of the Hay region including its World War II civilian internment and prisoner of war camps.

Bishops Lodge is an iron house that was built in 1888, uniquely designed to combat the harsh Hay climate. The house and its gardens are open six days a week.
