The rain comes at the 11th hour for people who have sown crops after a dry start and late break.
It was welcome news for Yerong Creek producer Ross Edwards of “Pindari.”
He said the falls were certainly welcome and definitely beneficial. “We are getting close to the shortest day of the year (June 21) and we need as much rain as possible,” he said.
Mr Edwards said the rain wasn’t just beneficial for winter crops but would also provide feed for livestock.
He said the seasonal conditions were offset a little by the fact that livestock prices were good and the wool market was “red hot.”
This allowed mixed farmers to take some of the pressure of the cropping operations and concentrate on livestock.
Mr Edwards said many people, including him and his son Phillip, had taken the option to sow grazing crops.
WHERE THE RAIN FELL
- Cootamundra 18mm
- Gundagai 17mm
- Temora 20mm
- Tumbarumba 36mm
- Culcairn 15mm
- Urana 5mm
He said the conditions throughout the Riverina and in regions like Junee and further north would have really benefited from recent falls.
“All of our crop is in, Phillip has sown oats, canola, and wheat,” he said.
“I think the grazing crops, this year, were the only way to go in some incidences because it was so dry throughout April,” he said.
“At least you can get some feed off it.”
