One man has died and two people have been airlifted to hospital following a head-on collision between two vehicles near Balranald.

Shortly after 10pm (Monday 16 July 2018), two vehicles collided on the Sturt Highway, about 10km east of Balranald.
The vehicle heading east, being driven by a man and carrying a male and female passenger, collided with a vehicle travelling west, being driven by a man.
The rear male passenger of the eastbound vehicle died at the scene while the male driver and female passenger where airlifted to Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, where they remain in a critical condition.
The driver of the westbound vehicle was taken to Swan Hill Hospital suffering fractures to his ankle and elbow. He remains in a stable condition.
A crime scene has been established and the Sturt Highway will remain closed for some time while investigations into the cause of the crash continue by officers from Barrier Police District.
