It comes after a run of records at Wagga and other centres in the past month or so.

So who will throw their hand in the air and yell out “$300” in a conscious bid to allow Wagga to claim back the national record? It’s something that is not out of reach but there will need to be enough weight in the extra-heavy lambs at Wagga. Buyers are looking for those perfectly-presented 38-kilogram plus lambs to get the job done and meet what is now a new national target. 

Word of the good prices, across all categories including the lighter weights, is spreading fast and Wagga has attracted a whopping 44,500 sheep and lambs for the Thursday market. And if the constantly increasing indicator prices are to be a guide it could well happen. 

Buyers have been prepared to increase margins with many centres reporting high prices.

Bendigo in Victoria saw extra-heavy lambs make $278 and Dubbo didn’t miss out on the action with a high of $286.

Griffith extra-heavy lambs made $284 and in another standout-sale at the same centre Merino lambs made a high of $252. 

But ultimately it was lambs offered by vendor Stuart Steiger of “Tarakan,” in Tamworth which made the national record price of $292. 

So now all eyes are back to Wagga to see what surprise packets vendors, livestock agents and buyers have up their sleeves.

There is nothing to suggest that those extra-heavy lambs wont be on the market.

And it is quite plausible that we could see one of the vendors, who has previously hit record territory, do it again with a second draft. 

For the buyers who are at the rail of what is a fast-paced auction at Wagga each Thursday it will be an opportunity to crunch the figures and dictate the next indicator results. 

And for consumers it possibly only means one thing. Lamb roasts are going to get more expensive.

But for those who are experiencing higher costs of production to get stock to market, due to the increasing dry conditions, the high prices can only be described as well-earned rewards.
