The price certainly marked a milestone and on the same day a new national lamb record for the extra-heavy category was set with a top of $305.20.

These kind of highs is enough to put the price per kilogram to more than 1000c/kg.

A total of  37,830 head were sold and there were 24,010 lambs included in that offering.

According to Meat and Livestock Australia’s National Livestock Reporting Service lamb numbers eased slightly and there was decreased quality compared to last week, with an increase of lambs lacking finish.

There were 4000 new-season lambs offered, which were generally well-presented as were the old heavy weight grades.

There were mainly trade lambs penned, with heavy lambs showing a reduced supply. There were large number of store new season lambs. All the buyers were operating and competition was very strong, resulting in a continuing dearer market. Light new season lambs to the processors averaged $152, while stores held firm averaging from $59 to $124/head.

Medium and heavy trade weight new season lambs were $5 to $8/head dearer and averaged from 895c to 915c/kg cwt.

Most of the better heavy trade weight new season lambs sold from $190 to $232/head. Trade weight old lambs were $10 to $13 stronger, averaging from 870c to 930c/kg cwt, making from $190 to $245/head. Heavy weight new season lambs sold from $232 to $238/head or 900c/kg cwt. Heavy weight old lambs sold to strong demand, making $10 to $15/head dearer or more in places, averaging from 880c to 960c, with some sales reaching over 1000c/kg cwt.

The extra heavy weight lambs sold from $258 to a top of $305.20/head, representing a new record price for lamb.

Mutton numbers decreased and quality was mixed throughout. Medium Merino ewes were $3 dearer and averaged from $91 to $107/head or 440c to 450c/kg cwt. Heavy first cross ewes were $4 stronger to average $145/head or 475c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino wethers sold to $172.90/head or 450c/kg cwt. Light mutton generally sold from $35 to $77/head.
