Their property, “Jackalass”, is 1200 hectares and located close to Gundagai.
The Elphicks first used Fabstock’s Lactation Pasture and Stubble mixes and got good results, with supplier Australian Farm & Fencing advising them in 2017 to try the Super Cycle mix, used to increase conception rates, on their maiden merino ewes.
“In the past the best weaning rate we’d achieved with our maiden merinos joined to White Suffolks was 75 per cent,” Dennis said.
“We fed it to a mob of 303 maiden ewes prior to and during joining at a total cost of $4 to $4.50 per ewe. We were very impressed after weaning 298 crossbred lambs (=98.3 per cent) off the 303 ewes, which was a 30 per cent increase, or 70 more lambs than our previous best result.”
There is no better way to improve a bottom line than by increasing weaning rates.
“We now feed Super Cycle to all our breeding ewes at joining, the lactation mixes prior to lambing through to weaning and the Kick Start weaner mix from point of weaning for a month,” Dennis said.
“I like the Fabstock range of supplements because they ensure my stock stay healthy, get what they need when they need it to maximise reproduction, weight gains and profitability. I have no hesitation in recommending Fabstock to improve gross margins without breaking the feed budget.”
