The facility will significantly increase performing arts and learning opportunities for boarders from Knox, with the new building located directly adjacent to the Knox Boarding Centre.

Boarders will have closed access to many of the new building facilities, including spaces for individual study and performing arts clubs and rehearsals.

"Research has consistently shown the many benefits that engagement in the performing arts has for young people in developing their creativity, emotional intelligence and well-being," Knox headmaster Scott James said.

"This incredible new facility offers a ground-breaking range of performing arts spaces and programs which will give each student at Knox the opportunity to fulfil his creative potential through music, drama, choir, dance, technical production and everything in between."

The Junior Academy and Performing Arts Centre includes features such as a 750-seat auditorium, 165-seat drama theatre, state-of-the-art music and drama classrooms, musical rehearsal rooms, a purpose-built dance studio for traditional and contemporary dance, soundproof private teaching rooms for one-on-one music tuition, a professional-quality, soundproof recording studio and a rock band lab.

The new facility also includes a Junior Academy lounge for year 7 and 8 students to collaborate, study and socialise, a year 7 and 8 café and outdoor recreation area with table tennis, handball and basketball courts.

"Grounded in Stanford University psychology professor Albert Bandura's 'Social Learning Theory', the Junior Academy will be a place that allows years 7 and 8 students to have a common and shared area of the school in which they can hold classes, engage in recreational play, congregate and build upon a shared identity," Mr James said.

"We are so excited to see how our students embrace this space over the coming months and years ahead.

"I have no doubt this facility will be truly transformative in the lives and education of future generations of young people at Knox."
