Bundaleer Merino Stud will be offering 120 rams this year at its 25th annual on-property sale at "Pine Ridge", Alma Park on September 13.
Bundaleer's repeat clients like the predictability of the progeny, the nourishment in the white, stylish wool and the ability to handle high rainfall. The combing ability of the wool when shearing is also highly valued.
"Our ewes are the backbone of our stud," stud principal Gavin Lieschke said. "Without a strong ewe base the predictability of the progeny is very limited and variable. We embryo-transfer the real top end of our ewes, from which our stud sires are bred."
Gavin said the best way to breed predictability is to use Bundaleer sires and not introduce too many outside genetics. "Our ewes are classed visually each time they are in the yards and during shearing," he said.
"We consistently remain true to our breeding objectives and continually cull to achieve this. Ewes that make it through our culling process each year are kept for as long as they have the ability to lamb. Longevity has been an important part of this stud program."
Bundaleer is breeding towards increasing its number of poll Merinos with better meat traits, while still cutting a good fleece weight. Rams on offer will be straight from the paddock and given only lick supplements as needed.
The rams are never on self-feeders and performance can be judged in normal paddock conditions.
