With the seasons remaining tight, now is the time for producers to make sure they are getting the most bang for their buck on hectares farmed and feed on offer.
And with prices at record highs and supply down, turning off prime lambs with rapid growth that are in high demand from processors is an obvious option.
New season poll Dorset-sired lambs have been making close to $250 for 22kg carcass weight lots already this year, while the Eastern States Trade Lamb Indicator still sits at 869c/kg.
At Valley Vista Poll Dorset Stud in Coolac, prime lamb sires are bred for high growth rate, length and muscle, as well as being structurally sound and ready to work in any environment.
We have been consistently culling out under-achieving stock so that selection pressure flows through to our clients.
- Valley Vista principal Andrew Scott
Valley Vista, much the same as the commercial producer, has focused on keeping their best genetics in good order and culling hard for anything that can't stand up under the pressure of poor seasons, meaning their rams have been bred to perform the same way.
"We have been consistently culling out under-achieving stock so that selection pressure flows through to our clients," Valley Vista principal Andrew Scott said.
The early growth and maturity, as well as structural correctness of the Valley Vista rams was on show at the NSW Dorset Championship in Cowra, where their sires won the junior champion and reserve junior champion awards.
The Valley Vista Poll Dorset stud was founded in 1976, originally at Burrumbuttock, NSW, before moving to Coolac, NSW in 1990 and undergoing expansion.
In 2008 Joe, James and Luke Scott founded the Valley Vista Park stud with the purchase of 18 stud ewes at the Kismet dispersal sale.
The Scott family has added to the genetic base over the years with purchases from the Armdale, Armdale Park, Tattykeel, Hillden, Kurralea and Graythorn studs.
Valley Vista will hold its 16th annual on-property sale on Friday, October 4, offering 10 select sires and 140 flock rams.
Pre-sale inspections will commence from 10am, with the auction kicking off at 1.30pm.
