In the Angus feature show steer class, cattle exhibited by Lockhart Central School and bred by the Henwood Family's Yammatree Family Trust in the Riverina placed first and third.
Kyle Wolter paraded the steer which came first and fellow student Kaitlyn Widdup was leading the third placed steer.
A steer exhibited by Alexandra College placed second.
The steer competition at Melbourne is known for attracting a large number of entries from various schools throughout the country.
James Henwood of Yammatree Station said it was the first time they had exhibited cattle at Melbourne.
He said to win the domestic class was fitting because that was inline with the commercial markets the cattle are destined for.
Mr Henwood said the students, and their teacher Dave Talbot, had done an excellent job in preparing the cattle for Melbourne.
Later this week the steers will be slaughtered and judged on the hook with points from the hoof competition combining for an overall result in the hoof and hook.
