July/August 2018 Merino ewes of Laurel Park blood in a draft of 445 head bred by Richard Davis and family's Mt Mulga Pastoral Company, West Wyalong, topped the sale at $258 each when purchased by Laurie Ford, Tungamah, Victoria.
Mt Mulga's other draft of 130 ewes of the same months but 2015, 16 and 17 drops, May shorn, sold at $190 each to West Wyalong.
Mallee Vale Pastoral Company, West Wyalong, sold 130 Merino ewes April/May '17 drop, August shorn and of Bluebush blood, sold at $250 each to repeat buyers Tony and Anne Mort, Benalla, Vic.
Quade Moncrieff Livestock and Property agent, Paul Quade, said this sale was well up on prices compared to the similar sale held on the same day last year.
"One vendor, Terry Cattle, Avalon, Mildil near West Wyalong, who sold old ewes and wether lambs, the same as last year, was rewarded with prices $40 a head up on both lots," Mr Quade said.
"His old ewes last year made $150/hd and he received $190/h this year while his wether lambs made $66 last year, but made $106 this year."
Mr Quade said there was not a lot of interest from the north, but majority of buyers were from southern NSW areas of Corowa, Culcairn, Wagga Wagga and Swan Hill and central Victoria.
"Those buyers seem to like the West Wyalong region sheep, and they keep coming back for more," Mr Quade said. "One buyer from Wagga told me he can buy the bigger-framed sheep here and the quality is always tops."
Wether lambs
Merino wether lambs bred by the Ward family, Ungarie, March/April 2019 drop of Collinsville blood, mulesed and August shorn topped the lamb market at $146 a head seling to Corowa.
Paraway Pastoral Company, sold a big line of 1700 Merino wether lambs, June/July '19 drop of Pooginook blood, mulesed and September shorn with the dearest pen at $102 a head for 750 head bought by a Swan Hill, Vic, restocker.
Crossbreds
Peter and Pat Wood, Roloma, Yalgogrin North, sold 500 second-cross mixed-sex lambs, May/June '19 drop, unshorn and crutched, sold to Henry Stanston Agencies, Tenmora, for $167 a head.
Merriam McDonell, Killarney, Buddigower, sold 140 first-cross Border Leicester/Merino mixed-sex lambs June/July '19 drop (Retallack rams/Yarrawonga blood ewes) sold at $158 to Corowa.
