Rodney has been prepared for market by John Rodd of Wagga. This is the 14th steer Mr Rodd has prepared to raise funds for charity in partnership with the Wagga RSL.
The 16-month-old Murray Grey steer, estimated to weigh 560 kilograms, was bred by Ted and Georgette Keen of Nawarra Murray Grey Stud at Gregadoo.
On Monday some of the children from Willans Hill School boarded a bus and headed for the cattle yards at the Keen's property.
It was a great chance to meet Rodney. Give him some pats and to talk to Mr Rodd about how the steer was prepared.
Students from the school were also able to meet with supporters of the project, Wagga RSL chief executive officer, Andrew Bell and president, Peter Thomas.
Mr Rodd said Rodney was probably one of the best steers he had prepared. The weight gain was on track and he was looking ready for market.
"I have prepared a lot of them over the years, and for other charities as well, and this one is definitely one of the best," Mr Rodd said.
Meanwhile, Mr Keen was also impressed with how the home-grown steer had performed in recent months while on feed and in preparation for the sale.
Given buyer support from previous sales of charity steers it was anticipated that Rodney could make as much as $12,000 with all of the proceeds going to the Willans Hill School.
