The news that Royal Melbourne Show 2020 wouldn't run due to coronavirus restrictions came as a blow to those in the rural industry.
It was crushing to hear for school children, who love to head to the royal each year and exhibit their cattle in the popular hoof and hook competition.
The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) will offer agricultural schools and tertiary institutions, along with beef cattle breeders, the opportunity to enter and exhibit in a hoof and hook competition, to be held at Yea Saleyards on Friday, September, 25, 2020.
RASV Beef Cattle Committee chairman David Bolton acknowledged the role that the Royal Melbourne Show has for many schools that compete each year.
In the past The Rural has followed the successful journeys of children with their steers from Billabong High School, Lockhart Central School and Wagga Christian College.
For school-aged children hoof and hook competitions are central to fostering an interest in the agricultural industry and preparing the next generation for a career in the rural sector.
The competitions offer great educational insights in the paddock to plate process which is integral to basic agricultural understanding.
Husbandry, camaraderie and just a bit of fun in general often accompanies the journey these young school children gain during their annual trips to Royal Melbourne Show.
Entries will open on Wednesday, May, 27 and close Wednesday, June, 24.
