Shows, field days and agricultural gatherings were mostly cancelled, or moved to an online format to accommodate the health requirements at the time.
MAY 12: Herefords Australia will hold the National Show and Sale at Wodonga. In it's 56th year, the event will adopt a new schedule and sale platform at its traditional home, the Wodonga Exhibition Centre. The show and sale will be held on a single day, Wednesday 12 May 2021, with judging to commence at 9.30am and the sale to follow at 2pm.
The streamlined event will mean potential buyers will be able to see bulls on show in the morning and get their bids in later that afternoon. And the dinner function will also return on Wednesday evening at Huon Hill, Wodonga, from 7pm, allowing all to catch-up and celebrate the event.
Adding to the event this year will be the Herefords Australia AGM, to be held on the grounds at 4pm on Tuesday 11 May, followed by an informal get-together and light refreshments. Erica Halliday of Ben Nevis Angus, Walcha, will be judging, following on from her successful adjudicating of the online show in 2020.
Last year's event, held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, included an industry leading virtual show alongside a successful AuctionsPlus sale, where bulls sold to $55,000 and averaged $9040.
MAY 26 to 28: Each year Holbrook Sheep and Wool Fair attracts stud sheep breeders and more than 150 secondary school students from throughout the Riverina, southern NSW and Victoria. The first day of the fair is Schools' Day and is dedicated to educational workshops for participating schools, before they compete with their school sheep in the Schools' Interbreed Competition.
Thursday is the Open Sheep Competitions between the different breeds and the judging of fleeces. It concludes on the Friday morning with the Open Sheep Interbreed classes and a presentation of various trophies. Various Judging Competitions are also conducted throughout the event. These consist of novice and senior sections for Merino Sheep, Meat Breed Sheep and Fleece Judging.
The Holbrook Sheep and Wool Fair also hosts the Riverina Group Final of the Meat Sheep Judging Competition, with the winner and runner-up qualifying to represent the Riverina at the State Final of this hotly-contested competition.
