Jess Treble from Newfield in South West Victoria began boarding at The Geelong College this year, coming into year 9. Both in and out of school it has been a big year so far for Jess.
Jess and year 11 student Tielle Lyons competed in the Victorian titles for Aerial hoops or Lyra, placing third and qualifying for the National Championships later this year.
“The aerial hoops is like trapeze, but instead it’s a suspended hoop that you swing and hang from,” Jess said.
“The competition, Miss Lyra Australia, is the only competition in Australia that is solely aerial hoop acts, so it was huge that we got through to nationals after competing in the Victorian heat.
“Tielle and I specialise in duo lyra, which means one hoop and two girls working together.
“We’re always looking for an opportunity to perform. If it’s a corporate event or competition, we’re in.
“It’s really motivating and exciting to see other lyra acts and skills, as well as going through the process of making the routine, learning the skills, and getting the make-up and costume down pat.”
And as if hanging from a hoop is not enough, Jess also specialises in foot juggling
“Foot juggling is when you throw around different objects using your feet (while lying down),” she said.
“I’m currently working on foot juggling suitcases, but I can also foot juggle a cylinder and carpets. Last year I went to Sydney and competed in the Australian Circus Festival with foot juggling and duo lyra with Tielle.”

Jess and Tielle had been training together for two years before Jess joined Tielle at Geelong College.
“I train on average two nights a week (one night with Tielle), but when we have an event coming up we tend to train more often, so I was already coming to Geelong a lot for training,” Jess said.
“When I decided that the school I was at wasn’t for me, Geelong College seemed to be the right place to go.
“Ever since I was young, I wanted to board. So I was happy that the only way I could go to Geelong College was to board. As soon as I visited Mossgiel, the girls’ boarding house, I knew it was a place I wanted to be.
“I absolutely love boarding. There’s a real community that’s super supportive in every way. I’m always busy, but I’m keeping up with my studies and enjoying all the opportunities I have.
“Everything is so much more accessible from the boarding house; at home it always took more than 20 minutes to get anywhere, you couldn’t catch up with friends as easily or have tutoring. The food is also very different. Being a boarder, you get heaps of support, especially academically.”

You never know Jess might end up living next door swinging from the ceiling or juggling carpets with her feet.
