FOR the first time since introducing poll genetics seven years ago, the poll Merino will dominate the catalogue at Broula Merino Stud’s on-property sale, Tarcutta on Friday, October 7.
The inclusion of “Yarrawonga 41” in the 2015 AI program and continued use of “Willandra GP” has ensured rapid expansion of the genetic pool of the poll Merino at Broula, according to principal Bruce Angel.
“We recognised the quality of the Y41 lambs at weaning time last year and added another two Yarrawonga sires to the 2016 AI program ensuring continued supply for clients going forward,” Bruce said.
After previous success with “Willandra GP”, widely acclaimed “Willandra Desmond” was added to the 2016 program.
"It has become evident that there has been a fundamental shift toward the poll Merino and a massive improvement across the industry in this area,” Bruce said.
“We identified the need to move with this change and we're glad we did. We've positioned ourselves well to supply great carcass polls with wools that can handle a number of different environments.”
Although the Broula Stud has introduced a breeding program to develop polls recently they have never shifted their focus from producing quality horned Merino rams.
